On 18 January, the German Embassy in Riyadh hosted a screening of three Saudi short movies on its premises. The joyful event brought together about one hundred guests, including Saudi filmmakers and artists as well as members of the German community and the Saudi general public.

In the presence of the directors, the films “Mazban” by Abdulrahman Jerash and “The Wedding Dress” by Mohammed Salman as well as a new movie by Maha Al-Saati were screened. Following the screening, the directors stood ready for a questions and answers session. For the filmmakers this was an opportunity to interact with the audience and to test the reactions of the very diverse group of spectators.
The event was part of a series of Saudi Movie Screenings at the Embassy, the next screening being planned before the summer break. With regard to the rationale for hosting such an event at the Embassy, the Cultural Attaché of the German Embassy, Dr. Rafael Heinisch, explained: “Our mission is to connect people through cultural exchange. By screening Saudi movies we provide a platform for Saudi filmmakers and for dialogue between the Saudi film scene, the diplomatic community and the Saudi society at large. We are happy and proud that so many people from all walks of life have attended tonight’s screening and we hope it will inspire them to take an interest in the thriving Saudi film scene.”
