Choosing a University

In Germany you can choose between a number of public and private universities: these include universities, universities of applied sciences and colleges of art, film and music. More than 400 state-accredited universities can be found in many different locations throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. Together, these universities offer almost 20,000 degree courses. Which one is right for you will depend, among other things, on your preferences. When choosing a university, you should have in mind:

• The academic strengths of the university
• The research profile to the University
• The environment of the university
• Tuition fees (In general, state universities do not charge fees for the majority of their courses. There is an obligatory contribution of 150-250 Euro per semester for student services. Private universities usually charge fees.)

Checking the requirements

Each university has its own conditions for accepting students, and has a certain amount of official documents that are to be presented if one wishes to apply for the university, and to know what is required to enroll in a certain university, you need to visit the website of the university, contact the university by email or get in touch with the international office of the university.

Applying through “uni-assist”

Uni-assist is an official organization that helps internationals students to apply for a study program in Germany. It evaluates applications by international student applicants for 180 German universities. Registering for the “Studienkolleg”

If you have a “regular” Saudi High School diploma, you will have to attend a preparatory Course (Studienkolleg) in Germany before joining university after the German course.
For different certificates (ex. SAT, IG) there are different regulations. But in most cases a Studienkolleg can not be avoided. Sometimes even a year of study in KSA will be required.
The System of Studienkollegs differs from region to region, and from university to university. So you have to inform yourself at the University of your choice, how they handle it. After this course your results will be added to the results of the secondary school certificate and you will have to apply again. Universities decide individually about their applicants. Here it depends on the requirements of every university. Foreign students are usually treated individually.
